Final Architecture Project for Fall 2006
The program, a site for the reality show Project Runway, deals with three primary spatial dichotomies: inside/outside, observing/observed, individual/collective. My study began by exploring the idea of overlap and how it relates to spaces. By overlapping two spaces, a third space is created. I began my exploration by creating a study model. By off-setting and overlapping two rectangles, a separate smaller rectangle is formed.

Diagonals between the corners of a rectangle create a direct connection between the corners. By connecting the corners of each rectangle, plans are formed. Connecting those planes creates a fourth space that forms a common path that directly connects the already existing spaces, these spaces then change to accommodate.

There are two main aspects of any reality show: the private production and the outcome which is broadcast for the public. My model attempts to overlap and combine these aspects within one building using the same dichotomies and spatial characteristics as my study model.

The first floor houses the sites store where designers can sell their designs; the second floor of my model is the setting for Project Runway. The runway for the show is open to the first floor, which allows customers to view designs that can potentially be purchased in the future.
